Fee Paid Exhibition Display Technician

What It's Like to Work Here

At IWM, we're driven by a shared purpose: helping people understand the causes, course and consequences of conflict and its impact on people's lives. As a Fee Paid Exhibition Display Technician, you'll play an important role in bringing powerful stories to life through exhibitions, displays and galleries across IWM. Working closely with curators, conservators, exhibition teams and other specialists, you'll help install, maintain and remove exhibitions while ensuring collection objects and works of art are displayed safely, accurately and to the highest museum standards. You'll be part of a collaborative team that combines technical expertise, creativity and collections care to create engaging experiences for visitors while protecting nationally significant collections for future generations.

Why This Role Matters

Exhibition Display Technicians play a crucial role in transforming IWM's collections and stories into meaningful public experiences. Through expert object handling, mount-making, art installation and display preparation, you'll help ensure that objects, artworks and exhibition elements are presented professionally, interpreted effectively and protected throughout their display life. Your contribution will support exhibitions that inspire curiosity, encourage reflection and challenge perceptions of conflict and its consequences. By helping to create displays that communicate IWM's mission, you'll directly contribute to increasing understanding of why we go to war and the impact conflict has on people's lives.

What You'll Be Doing

Install, dress and de-install exhibits for temporary exhibitions, permanent galleries and display spaces across IWM.

Assist with display case layouts and support the effective presentation of exhibitions and gallery displays.

Move, position and install display cases, exhibition furniture, props and materials.

Hang works of art and ensure exhibits are presented to the highest museum standards.

Design and produce museum-quality and conservation-grade mounts using brass, acrylic and other appropriate materials.

Develop practical and creative mounting solutions while ensuring compliance with conservation and lender requirements.

Handle, unpack, photograph, record, mount and prepare collection and loan objects for display.

Safely pack and prepare exhibits and collection items for transportation and return following exhibitions.

Maintain display cases and gallery spaces to ensure exhibitions remain presentation-ready throughout their display period.

Operate workshop machinery, tools and equipment safely while maintaining high standards of health and safety.

Maintain clean, organised and safe workshop and gallery working environments.

Support sustainable working practices through the recycling and reuse of mounts and materials where appropriate.

Contribute to continuous improvement, share knowledge with colleagues and support the successful delivery of IWM's exhibition programme.

What We're Looking For

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

GCSE-level education or equivalent, and/or a relevant vocational or professional qualification.

Recent experience producing museum-standard mounts for a variety of objects and display requirements.

Proven experience handling a wide range of museum objects in accordance with professional standards.

Experience hanging works of art within museum, gallery or exhibition environments.

Demonstrable experience packing and preparing a wide range of items to museum standards.

Excellent attention to detail and experience maintaining accurate and meticulous records.

Practical woodworking skills and experience using workshop tools and equipment.

Experience using online research systems and software applications, including Microsoft Office, Excel, email systems and internet-based tools.

A collaborative and professional approach, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues across multiple disciplines.

A strong commitment to health and safety, collections care and high standards of workmanship.
