Collections Systems Manager

Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our strategy ‘Charting Our Course’ puts people at the core of its success.

Working in the Collections Services Department and reporting to the Senior Manager, Collections Information and Registration, the Collections Systems Manager will be responsible for ensuring that Museum staff are fully supported with a robust and effective collections management system, along with reports, tools and appropriate training. The Collections Systems Manager is a new role to plan for and manage the replacement of the Museum’s collections management system (Mimsy XG), to scope and roadmap the required upgrade from Mimsy XG to a new collections management system. Key responsibilities include overseeing and managing the development of existing data on the Museum’s current collections management system, Mimsy XG, into a robust “backbone data” set that will support further development and systems integration. This role will work with Museum stakeholders to improve how we use collections management and other interoperable systems to acquire and manage born digital objects, underpinned by the Digital Preservation Policy.

The successful candidate will need to have demonstrable experience of the processes required for reviewing and procuring collections management systems, with experience of working with Mimsy XG, Crystal Reports, electronic document and records management systems and digital asset management systems. The role requires excellent IT skills, including demonstrable experience of the application and database development of a recognised museum collections management system and reporting tools to an advanced standard. Experience of data conversion, migration projects and analysis of collection data is essential for this post, as is experience of providing training to all users of collections management systems. The postholder will have experience of developing close working relationships with key stakeholders and IT suppliers both internally and externally. Proven organisation, time-management and project management planning skills, experience of working successfully to deadlines and a flexible and proactive approach to scheduling and completing tasks are also essential to this role.

This is a full time, permanent role in Band 5 – Middle Management and Professional Specialists. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, working 5 days between the hours of 9am-5pm. On occasion, some flexibility may be required.

In return we offer a culture encouraging inclusion and diversity, pension, 22 days annual leave (rising to 25 days after 1 year), training and development opportunities, free or discounted admissions and more.

Salary: £35,885 per annum
