Software Engineer

The Natural History Museum’s Informatics Division use digital technologies, platforms, and devices to unlock answers to the big issues facing humanity and the planet. The group is responsible for delivering the museum’s digital science innovation, and leads several international initiatives to digitise natural history collections and exploit the associated data.

To develop these platforms and help to deliver our digital science strategy, we are recruiting two Software Engineers to work within the group’s software development team. Their primary responsibilities will be to develop, support and innovate the museum’s Data Portal ( and Scratchpads Virtual Research Environment ( These systems provides open access to the museum’s collections data and images, as well as supporting a global community of researchers studying the natural world.

Under the supervision of the developer team’s Technical Leads, the posts will initially focus on these two systems, but includes opportunities for collaborative development on other innovative informatics projects. Successful candidates should have a strong interest in Open Data and contributing to Open source software development. Subject to successful probation, both roles allow for partial remote working and occasional international travel.
