The Queen’s House Art Materials and Techniques Explainer Volunteer

The Queen’s House Art Materials and Techniques Explainer will assist the Visitor and Sales team to deliver an exceptional visitor experience to a broad and diverse audience by presenting art materials, techniques and creative processes.

From a selection of different brushes and inks to how lines and colours impact artworks, our knowledgeable, enthusiastic and committed volunteers will help a broad audience to discover a wealth of information about art materials, techniques and creative processes using the artworks displayed at the Queen’s House as an inspiration.

Key Responsibilities:

• Engaging in a lucid and didactic manner with a broad and diverse audience by explaining different art materials, techniques and creative processes.

• Managing a small table of art materials and other resources, showing visitors how to correctly use different items and providing context and background.

• Answering questions that visitors may have about art materials, techniques and creative processes, providing further information and context.

• Explaining how different art materials such as brushes, canvases and pigments work and are used to create artworks.

• Explaining how different elements impact on artistic expression, including line, colour, light, composition and style.

• Explaining different art forms and the techniques behind them, such as painting, weave, sculpture and photography, using the Queen’s House collection as an inspiration.

• Carefully unpacking the materials and storing them safely and the end of each session.

Skills and experience required:

• Enthusiasm for learning about the history and stories of the Queen’s House and its vast art collection.

• Knowledge and/or experience in Arts, Design, Conservation, Architecture, Photography or other creative fields.

• Excellent communication skills, friendly and welcoming.

• The ability to engage with people of different ages, abilities and backgrounds

• A commitment to good customer service.

• Pro-active and creative.

• Reliability and good time-keeping skills.

• Knowledge of the Queen’s House, Greenwich and Art History would also be very welcome.

Time Commitment:

• Once a week, between June and September 2025.

• Shifts between 11:00-15:00 or 12:00-16:00, with a lunch break.

• Availability regarding days and times can be discussed and agreed with the Queen’s House Volunteer Co-ordinator.
