Our collection of over 33m objects covers all aspects of conflict involving Britain, its former Empire and the Commonwealth, and includes art, film, photography, printed material, documents and sound. Job Summary:
The Director, Collections Operations is responsible for all matters relating to the care, preservation, conservation and digitisation of IWM’s collections. Making an authoritative contribution to the Operational Delivery Group (ODG) and advising the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), the post holder works collaboratively with other functions including collections strategy, curators and exhibitions, to deliver the Museum’s overall strategy to the highest possible standards.
Responsibilities:
Conservation – Lead on the development and delivery of strategic programmes to conserve collection material. Ensuring conservators and contractors are in place and ensuring value for money and follow internal procurement requirements.
Preservation – Lead on planning and managing collections care programmes across the IWM. Oversee identification of external contractors and ensuring value for money and follow internal procurement requirements.
Visual Resources – Oversee the Digital Future Strategy. Oversee Digitisation (Access) to ensure a programme to deliver digitisation of IWM assets in support of public and commercial programmes. Oversee Digitisation (Preservation) to deliver digitisation where the longevity of the original asset is short
Project Delivery – Oversee IWM storage strategy. Responsible for ensuring IWM’s collection stores are managed to agreed standards, and that security systems and processes are fit for purpose. Delivering the collection to internal functions and external partners, ensuring it is professionally managed in the process. Lead the IWM governance of hazardous collections and maintain to legislative standards. Ensuring advice provided by the team is appropriate and timely. Maintain IWM location and movement policy and procedures. Advise on governance issues. Develop and embed environmentally sustainable practices in collection care.
