Exhibitions Conservator

The Public Engagement team at the Bodleian Libraries is looking for an experienced Exhibitions Conservator to join the exhibitions and loans team to support our programme of work and contribute to the smooth running of the section. You will play a key part in the delivery of an exciting programme of exhibitions, loans and community projects, which seek to engage diverse audience groups with Oxford research and Bodleian collections. By connecting with the public we aim to share the Bodleian’s globally significant collections and buildings and increase knowledge through collaborative and enjoyable, two-way engagement.

Reporting to the Exhibitions Manager, the post-holder will be one of the core eight-person team responsible for delivering the Bodleian Libraries exhibition programme and maintaining the busy programme of loans to other institutions both nationally and internationally. These projects involve the special collections of the Bodleian Libraries. Recent exhibitions have included: Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth; Roots to Seeds: 400 years of Oxford Botany; and Melancholy: A New Anatomy. The work is varied and the post holder will work collaboratively with colleagues from across the Library, the University and other external partners.

You will participate in the planning and installation of exhibitions and displays as well as acting as a courier for outgoing loans. You will participate in forward planning activities, undertake collection condition assessments and design individual bespoke mounts for Library material. You will be an integral part all exhibition teams. You will take responsibility for delivering short displays on central Bodleian site. Working with a curator you will plan, manage and design small displays in collaboration with, and independently from, the Exhibitions Manager. You will review exhibition plans and interpret environmental data concerning Library collections. You will make recommendations on case design and finishing material, and research and advise on other conservation issues. You will be responsible for lighting exhibitions to ensure good display standards within safe conservation limits.

You will possess an excellent aesthetic sense with an eye for detail and the ability to proof and edit text for small displays which will involve working alongside library curatorial staff. You will work with the designer and other colleagues to produce a variety of accompanying graphic material for displays.

This is a full-time, permanent post working 37.5 hours per week.

You will be required to upload both a supporting statement and your CV as part of your online application.
