We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and skilled Executive Assistant to support the Chief Librarian at the British Library.

We are the national library of the United Kingdom and give access to the world’s most comprehensive research collection. We provide information services to academic, business, research and scientific communities.

Our collection of over 170 million items includes artefacts from every age of written civilisation. We keep the nation’s archive of printed and digital publications, adding around three million new items to our collection every year.

As one of the three most senior roles in the Library, the Chief Librarian is responsible for leading the organisation on all matters to do with its custodianship role, its services to support research, culture, learning and business, and its global mission as an institution of curatorial and scholarly excellence.

The Executive Assistant will provide comprehensive, high quality professional support to the Chief Librarian and Heads of Service in the Chief Librarian’s portfolio, act as a role model and mentor to Business Support Officers across the Library, manage training budget for the Chief Librarian’s area and manage day-to-day office administration.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter who is confident, resilient, impeccably organised and highly efficient at managing their workload and priorities. You will have a proactive approach to handling a variety of sensitive and complex matters whilst using a well-placed sense of judgment, organisational sensitivity, discretion and confidentiality.

The ability to work in a dynamic, high profile environment with excellent oral and written communication skills is a must as well has having political awareness and the ability to deal effectively with stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally.

As one of the world’s great libraries, our duty is to preserve the nation’s intellectual memory for the future and make it available to all for research, inspiration and enjoyment. At present we have well over 170 million items, in most known languages, with three million new items added every year. We have manuscripts, maps, newspapers, magazines, prints and drawings, music scores, and patents. We make our collections and programmes available to all. We operate the world’s largest document delivery service providing millions of items a year to customers all over the world. What matters to us is that we preserve the national memory and enable knowledge to be created both now and in the future by anyone, anywhere.

In return we offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits. Our pension scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our staff can become members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library contributes a minimum of 20.6% (this may be higher dependant on grade. Another significant benefit the Library provides is the provision of a flexible working hours scheme which could allow you to work your hours flexibly over the week and to take up to 5 days flexi leave in a 3 month period. This is on top of 25 days holiday from entry and public and privilege holidays.
