The British Museum is seeking a Photographer to join the Collection Services department. Working under the guidance of a Senior Photographer, this role will undertake day-to-day studio commitments to create high quality photographs in support of client briefs. The role is designed to introduce a junior/entry level photographer to the photographic and imaging demands of a major cultural institution in the 21st century, whilst providing a developmental environment for the individual in the field of heritage imaging.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Produce high quality digital and film images to meet agreed creative briefs in line with
Photography and Imaging workflow procedures.
Process images and enter data into the Museum image database.
Liaising with collection management colleagues on the delivery and return of objects to respective departments.
Identify technical problems and refer to line manager for guidance and solutions.
Report on production issues to the Senior Photographer.
As required, work outside normal working hours e.g. weekends and evenings to document Museum events and support of Museum’s public programmes.
As required, work on locations in UK and abroad.

Person Specification:

Education: GCSE level education or equivalent experience including maths and English.
Other qualifications: high quality portfolio of relevant work, showing competency.
Specific technical/professional skills & experience: knowledge of photographic processes and technologies; practical use of professional camera systems; practical understanding of digital capture (Phase One), including low and high-end capture devices; Adobe Photoshop and/or other image editing software.
Work experience: prior experience of working in a professional photographic environment.
Specific interpersonal skills: teamwork: ability to work effectively with others; flexibility: demonstrates a willingness to adapt to changing priorities and deal with urgent deadlines; communication: is able to communicate clearly with Line Manager, customers concerning delivery of image requirements and with department staff over workflow issues; tenacity: is a self-starter and is able to work through and complete large jobs that may overlap conflicting requests.
