Conservator (One Collection)

As the largest and most ambitious programme the Science Museum Group has undertaken in recent times, One Collection will transform how we care for, access, and share our internationally significant collection with the world.
As part of the One Collection programme, we are now recruiting for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Conservator to work alongside our Project Conservation and Packing teams based at the Blythe House site in London. Working with Science Museum Group policies and protocols, you will ensure collection objects are safe for handling and in suitable condition to be moved to the National Collections Centre (NCC) in Wiltshire.
You will be involved in condition assessing collection items, identifying objects that need intervention to enable them to be moved safely, remediating hazardous objects appropriately, and completing specialist packing. You will use your strong IT skills to ensure data is meticulously recorded into the Mimsy XG database and rapid data entry app.
Utilising your relevant practical conservation experience and knowledge in addition to your excellent interpersonal and communication skills you will provide conservation advice to the One Collection Packing team, ensuring objects are protected during object packing and transportation. You will work safely yourself and with other colleagues, ensuring the safety and longevity of the collection throughout the packing and transportation phase of the project.
Joining us you will have a positive approach to working with the ability to work well under pressure to meet tight deadlines calmly and effectively. Crucially you will also possess knowledge and practical application of current UK Health and Safety practice including awareness of collections-based hazards.
The Science Museum Group (SMG) is here to inspire futures. As the world’s leading group of science museums, we share our unparalleled collection spanning science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine with over five million visitors each year. Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group. We know work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we currently offer up to 25 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays; BUPA medical and dental care; employee assistance programme; enhanced contributory pension; enhanced occupational sick, maternity, paternity and adoption leave and career breaks.

‘Open for All’ is one of the Science Museum Group’s five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. As a national museum group, we have an ability to reach a wide and diverse population of audiences, colleagues and partners through our geography and scale.

We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to foster a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation and ultimately will be able to inspire more futures. We therefore welcome applications from those who bring difference.
