Senior Project Conservator

As the Science and Industry Museum is embarking on an exciting masterplan to redevelop buildings and galleries across the historic site, this means moving parts of the collection from Manchester to the Group’s National Collections Centre at Wroughton in Wiltshire for safekeeping during redevelopment.

We are recruiting for a Senior Project Conservator within the Collections Services department. As Senior Project Conservator for the Gallery Project, you will manage the decant of the gallery, ensuring movement and packing of this unique collection follows best practice to meet strategic and statutory requirements.

This role will work alongside specialist contractors to prepare and move objects and offers the right candidate an opportunity to build their experience of working with large and complex objects, where transferable conservation and packing skills can be utilised and a flare for organisation will lead to the satisfying and successful completion of the project.

Your responsibilities will include planning, monitoring and executing conservation packing and moving activity for the gallery project, primarily working with large objects. Utilising your practical project management experience, you will be responsible for day-to-day project management, successfully delivering the project to time and on budget as scoped.

Joining us you will have experience of working with museum collections, and you will possess the ability to work under pressure to meet tight project deadlines, able to make evidence-based decisions and be adaptable in the face of change. In this role you will liaise with Collections Care colleagues at our National Collections Centre (NCC) site in Wroughton and transport contractors meaning good communication and interpersonal skills are crucial.

The Science Museum Group (SMG) is here to inspire futures. As the world’s leading group of science museums, we share our unparalleled collection spanning science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine with over five million visitors each year. Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group. We know work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we currently offer up to 25 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays; BUPA medical and dental care; employee assistance programme; enhanced contributory pension; enhanced occupational sick, maternity, paternity and adoption leave and career breaks.

‘Open for All’ is one of the Science Museum Group’s five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. As a national museum group, we have an ability to reach a wide and diverse population of audiences, colleagues and partners through our geography and scale.

We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to foster a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation and ultimately will be able to inspire more futures. We therefore welcome applications from those who bring difference.
