Head of Access & Equity

As a national museum group, we have both an important institutional responsibility to be as inclusive and accessible as possible and the potential to reach a wide and diverse population of audiences, colleagues and partners through our geography and scale.

We are excited to announce we are now recruiting for a Head of Access & Equity to lead this work from an access and audience-centred perspective. The Head of Access & Equity will provide advice and direction across SMG in relation to physical, intellectual, and sensory access, and will ensure that access, diversity, inclusion, and equity issues are fully considered in all our work. You will play a key role in implementing and delivering our new ten-year Learning Strategy, with an approach which is audience-focussed, equitable, evidence-based, collaborative, relevant, agile, efficient, and sustainable. You will use a ‘science capital’ approach in all your work to encourage people to feel more at home with science. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with significant experience of enhancing access, diversity and inclusion to contribute to the Science Museum Group’s mission to inspire futures, in an equitable way.

Joining us, you will have substantial experience of enhancing access, diversity and inclusiveness in an organisation and of involving D/deaf and disabled people and other groups in this work. You will have a track-record of building relationships, advising and influencing a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including those at a senior level. You will hold strong organisational skills, with experience of successfully managing budgets and multiple projects and/or programmes. This will be a highly collaborative role, so experience of understanding and advocating for a wide range of interests and viewpoints will be beneficial.

The Science Museum Group is here to Inspire Futures. As the world’s leading group of science museums, we share our unparalleled collection spanning science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine with over five million visitors each year. Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group. We know work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we currently offer up to 27 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays; BUPA medical and dental care; employee assistance programme; enhanced contributory pension; enhanced occupational sick, maternity, paternity, and adoption leave and career breaks. This role will initially work remotely but as we all start to get back to working on site, this role will be based atone of our museums. If not based at Science Museum, this role will require regular travel to London.

‘Open for All’ is one of the Science Museum Group’s five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to foster a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation and ultimately will be able to inspire more futures. We therefore welcome applications from those who bring difference.
