Reporting to the Exec Director of Business Resources you will lead and shape the strategic development, design and implementation of risk management across NML providing technical expertise, challenge, support and guidance in order to drive and maintain a robust and consistent risk management experience, reduced risk profile and strengthen risk maturity and awareness.

Over the 12-month period you will develop and maintain a risk and control framework suitable for a diverse range of functions and operational activities involving more than 800 colleagues and requiring complex and technical risk solutions

You will also lead a small team to provide suitable support to the governance function of NML including organising Trustee meetings and provide all necessary support to Trustees, maintaining all necessary records of corporate business and assisting in the appointment process for Trustees and the induction of new trustees.

Purpose

Accountabilities

  • Drive the development of a strong risk culture throughout NML through the delivery of embedding activities which ensures that risk, and the importance of its management, is fully understood, embedded and adhered to by all colleagues.
  • Lead, design, shape and deliver a programme of activity to strengthen the existing NML risk management framework and ensure it is aligned to Orange Book requirements, specifically focusing on:
    • Risk identification, management, monitoring and assessment
    • Risk reporting, dashboards and metrics
    • Risk appetite
    • Issue and action management process
    • Control effectiveness and testing
    • Risk management systems (inc. Rhiza)
    • Risk event reporting
  • Lead an improved risk capability across NML through the development and delivery of e-learning modules and face to face training  
  • Develop and maintain a risk governance structure that provides effective oversight and challenge to enable the Executive Directors to discharge their risk accountabilities and facilitates the appropriate escalation of issues
  • Ensure Board and all Committee members are appropriately supported, their accountabilities are understood and managed and the governance function is serviced by the team.
  • Strategically manage the development and building of a proportionate 3 Lines of defence model for NML ensuring it is both proportionate and supports collaborative working.
  • Investigate, shape and implement a risk based model which ensures that risk considerations are implicit in all strategic decision making.
  • Liaise and engage directly with key influencers within the risk community across the industry.  Build networks and develop relationships to understand risk delivery across the sector in order to drive best practice solutions.
  • As a senior leader provide wider leadership across all internal and external stakeholders to enhance colleague engagement and our reputation as NML.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience of operating within a senior risk role
  • Educated to degree level with a recognised professional risk or assurance qualification
  • Extensive knowledge of NML, its activities and the risk framework in which it is required to operate in
  • Excellent stakeholder management and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to interact and influence stakeholders across all levels of the organisation including Executive Directors and the Board
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding the risk management frameworks and the ability to shape policy and processes into effective solutions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Comprehensive understanding of company strategy and objectives with the ability to directly align role to the business strategy
