Research Development Manager

Full Time, Permanent.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an established Research Development Team who co-ordinate the British Library’s activities and strategy as an Independent Research Organisation (IRO). With a research portfolio of over 50 funded projects, multiple fellowship programmes and a large collaborative doctoral programme, you will be part of a dynamic four-person team, contributing to all aspects of British Library research strategy development, its governance and administration.

You will initiate and shape new opportunities for externally funded research collaborations across all subject disciplines, ensuring they align with the Library’s Living Knowledge strategy. Working closely with British Library staff and external partners, you will help develop research bids to a range of UK and international funders including UKRI (particularly AHRC), UK government supported funds, trusts, academies and overseas bodies. You will lead on research development for the Library in relation to Heritage and Music collections, and Digital Humanities. You will also contribute to the administration, evaluation and enhancement of the wide range of ongoing research development activity at the Library.

You will develop strategies and establish practices that enable the British Library to maximise the benefits it derives from involvement in research in line with our core purposes. You will develop and support engagement activities to promote awareness of the value and purposes of the BL as an independent research organisation with a range of professional and public audiences.

As one of the world’s great libraries, our duty is to preserve the nation’s intellectual memory for the future. At present we have well over 150 million items, in most known languages, with three million new items added every year. We have manuscripts, maps, newspapers, magazines, prints and drawings, music scores, and patents. We operate the world’s largest document delivery service providing millions of items a year to customers all over the world. What matters to us is that we preserve the national memory and enable knowledge to be created both now and in the future.

In return we offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits. Our pension scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our staff can become members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library contributes 26.6% (this may be higher dependant on grade) . Another significant benefit the Library provides is the provision of a flexible working hours scheme which could allow you to work your hours flexibly over the week and to take up to 5 days flexi leave in a 3 month period. This is on top of 25 days holiday from entry and public and privilege holidays.
