Collections Project Team Leader

Do you have good leadership skills and knowledge or experience of preventative conservation? Are you able to make decisions based on evidence and show adaptability in the face of change?

As the largest and most ambitious programme the Science Museum Group has undertaken in recent times, One Collection will transform how we care for, access and share our internationally significant collection with the world.

Over the next five years we will study, photograph and transport 35,000 large objects across the National Collections Centre in Wiltshire to a new purpose-built collection management facility being built on site. This new facility will house over 80% of the Science Museum Group Collection, including 320,000 objects from Blythe House in West London, and from 2023 will open regularly through a varied programme of public tours, school and research visits.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Collections Project Team Leader to lead a team of Project Officers and work alongside the conservation team to document, prepare, pack and transport the diverse collections in the National Collections Centre. You will manage three key areas of the project: the documentation, packing programme and transport of the large objects at the National Collections Centre to the newly built store, Building ONE. You will also be involved in the implementation and planning of the preventive conservation and hazard management of objects. During the first 2 months you will collaborate on the development of the documentation, packing and transport workflows. You will then head up the team of NCC Internal Moves Project Assistants to oversee the delivery of the whole process.

You will be working to ensure objects are documented and packed to meet our transport schedule, whilst providing the required protection to fragile museum objects. You will manage the daily operations of the team, who will be working systematically and rapidly through the collection to document, hazard survey, clean and pack every object. You will play a crucial role in making the entire Science Museum collection available digitally through the Collections Online portal. You will ensure your team is working safely themselves, with other colleagues and keeping the collection safe throughout the documentation, packing and move.

You will be offered excellent benefits, including 25 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays, a contributory pension scheme, BUPA medical and dental care, an annual season ticket loan and numerous staff discounts whilst developing your career in a world class museum group.
