The Science Museum Group (SMG) operates one of the largest, most complex and iconic science-based estates in the world, incorporating the Science Museum in London, the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, the National Railway Museum in York, Locomotion in Shildon, the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford, and the Science + Innovation Park in Wroughton.

We have an ambitious and exciting investment programme to transform our sites to enhance the visitor experience and ensure our collection is protected for generations to come. The programme will help improve safety and resilience, enhance operational effectiveness and lower the museums' carbon footprint, while aiming to minimise the impact on the day-to-day operations of our museums.

To support this programme, we are seeking a Capital Project Manager to join us on a permanent basis. This is a full-time role, working 35 hours per week, based at the National Railway Museum in York with hybrid working available.

About the role

As Capital Project Manager, you'll lead a portfolio of projects across SMG's museums, delivering them safely and to agreed time, cost and quality standards.

Working closely with the Senior Project Manager, you'll deliver medium to large-scale projects, typically valued between £200k and £1m, from early planning through to completion. These could include infrastructure improvements, building conservation, maintenance and repair works that help keep our museums sustainable, resilient and inspiring places to visit.

You'll work with colleagues, consultants, contractors and senior stakeholders to manage budgets, risks and relationships, ensuring projects are delivered with minimal disruption to museum operations.

About you

By joining us, you will be an effective communicator and skilled at engaging stakeholders - you'll be building trusting relationships with colleagues across the organisation, engaging with senior leaders, and bringing internal and external project teams together to deliver alongside live museum operations. You will have a proven history of delivering construction-related projects through a structured project management approach, aligned where possible with the RIBA Plan of Work.

You should have well-developed organisational and financial management skills, solid knowledge of construction methods, building regulations, and CDM Regulations 2015, and the ability to oversee multiple priorities in a complex environment.
