Can you shape the digital transformation of one of the UK's most visited museum groups?
About us
The Science Museum Group (SMG) is a world-leading cultural organisation, welcoming millions of visitors each year to the Science Museum in London, the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, the National Railway Museum in York, Locomotion in Shildon, and the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford.
Digital is changing how people discover culture, plan visits and connect with meaningful stories. At SMG, this creates an exciting opportunity to make our collections more accessible, relevant and engaging through audience-first digital experiences.
Over the next four years, we will bring our websites, online collections and museum experiences together into a more seamless digital journey, expanding our reach, boosting commercial resilience and building the skills and responsible AI practices needed to innovate with confidence.
We are seeking a Head of Digital Products and Experience to develop SMG's goal for a more connected digital experience across our sites. This is a full-time role (35 hours per week) and can be based at any Science Museum Group site.
The role currently works to a hybrid working pattern, which offers flexibility to work from home. There will be a requirement to travel between our sites with frequent travel to London as this is where a majority of the team sit.
About the role
As Head of Digital Products and Experience, you will shape how millions of people discover, plan and engage with Science Museum Group experiences online. You will oversee the reimagining of our digital environment, crafting cohesive audience pathways that link our museums, collections, and services while delivering measurable gains for audiences, income generation, and fundraising.
Reporting to the Chief Digital Officer, you will oversee the Science Museum Group's digital presence, making sure it provides engaging, audience-centered experiences that connect people with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
This is a strategic, product-led role with a wider remit than web alone. The role holder will oversee the digital product roadmap, embed an audience-first approach to product and content development, and generate measurable results aligned with the Group's audience, commercial, and fundraising goals. They will lead a multidisciplinary team of web managers, an analyst and product owners, with scope to grow the team to include UX/UI roles in the future.
The role will promote product-thinking across the organisation, working with senior stakeholders and helping embed audience-centred, data-informed decision making.
About you
By joining us, you will bring broad experience leading digital products and platforms for public audiences, with clear strengths in roadmap development, user experience improvement, and impactful service delivery. You will be an inclusive and empowering leader with experience managing multidisciplinary teams and creating the conditions for high-quality digital work.
You'll also bring deep knowledge of agile delivery, SEO, and emerging AI search trends, along with curiosity about how technology can improve audience experiences and team effectiveness, plus a commitment to using innovation to create meaningful digital experiences.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
