Would you enjoy inspiring visitors and bringing science and technology to life?
About us
At the Science Museum Group, STEM engagement is at the heart of what we do. We inform, inspire and encourage learning on-site, as well as through outreach and online.
Our Explainer team are motivated by this mission; they help to create new, fun informal, learning activities to engage visitors through science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
We are now recruiting for Explainers to join on a permanent basis. This will be on a full-time contract based at the Science Museum in London. The full-time working pattern is 37.5 hours per week, working 9.30-18.00 and rostered to work 1 weekend in 2.
About the role
As an Explainer, you will help bring the museum to life by facilitating visitor engagement with our collections and interactive exhibits. You will deliver talks, workshops, and demonstrations for a wide range of audiences, from young children and families to school groups and adult visitors.
You'll adapt your communication style to suit different audiences, ensuring experiences are engaging, accessible, and meaningful for everyone. Following training, you'll also safely deliver science demonstrations and workshops, using your facilitation skills and judgement to create memorable experiences.
About you
By joining us, you'll bring strong communication skills and enthusiasm for working with people of all ages. You'll feel confident speaking to groups and engaging visitors in conversation, especially children and families.
You'll understand what great customer service looks like and enjoy working collaboratively within a team. You'll also be adaptable, proactive, and open to learning, using your initiative while knowing when to seek support.
You'll thrive working in a diverse environment and be able to build effective relationships with colleagues across the organisation.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
