Do you want to play an active role in preserving some of the most iconic objects in science and technology?
About us
The Conservation & Collections Care team (C&CC) support all conservation activity across the collection and are responsible for establishing and maintaining conservation and collection care standards.
We are seeking a Conservator (Masterplan Projects) to join on a full time basis at the Science Museum. This is a fixed term contract until the end of July 2027.
About the role
As one of the Conservators (Masterplan Projects), you will conduct preventive and interventive conservation as part of a team assembled to deliver collections moves. Your work will include the re-location of the museum's Making the Modern World Gallery. The gallery currently houses over 2000 objects, charting 250 years of science and technology and includes some of the most iconic objects that have shaped our society. You will ensure appropriate methodologies are used, including condition checking and producing appropriate documentation. In addition, you will undertake interventive object conservation where needed to stabilise objects for transport and storage.
This role enables you to further develop conservation skills across a wide variety of tasks and object types, while contributing to a busy, goal-driven project.
Whilst we support flexible working, please note that only minimal hybrid working will be available due to the in-person nature of this project. Some out of hours work may be required on occasion.
About you
Joining us, you will have practical experience and knowledge of conservation and collections care practices, including condition reporting and remedial conservation treatment of 3D objects. Experience of collections moves and project work is also desirable.
Crucially, you will be an effective communicator and team player, able to complete work within set deadlines and in time-sensitive situations. You will have good knowledge of UK Health & Safety Practice, including manual handling, collections hazard management, lifting and moving equipment, and writing Risk and COSHH assessments.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
