Assistant Registrar (24 month FTC)

Ready to play a key role in safeguarding and transferring nationally significant collections with a methodological approach, pragmatism and attention to detail?

About the role

The Science Museum Group's Registration department is a thriving and dynamic team. We are seeking to recruit a new Assistant Registrar to work with the Collections Registrar on historic and legacy work at the Science and Innovation Park. In addition, you will be playing a pivotal part in delivery of our Transfers and Removals programme and support delivery of other Collection projects.

You will have the opportunity to expand and develop your skills and knowledge in Registration. You will be working with large complex objects, developing object hazard awareness and completing provenance research, splitting your time between office-based tasks and practical hands-on support in the Collection stores.

The role will be based at the Science & Innovation Park in Wroughton, with a hybrid home working arrangement of at least 2 days on site per week.

This role is a fixed term 24 month contract, working Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week. You will be based at the Science & Innovation Park in Wroughton, with a hybrid working arrangement of at least 2 days on site per week. We recognise that flexibility matters, so we're happy to discuss how those days could be arranged to work for both you and the team during the interview process.

About you

We're keen to hear from candidates with practical experience in museums or cultural/heritage organisations, particularly those who have coordinated loans, acquisitions, or transfers and arranged the packing and transport of objects. A solid understanding of Collections Management Systems, combined with effective organisational skills and attention to detail, will help you thrive in this role. You'll be able to manage a varied workload with tight deadlines and have the resilience and problem-solving skills to stay on track even when things don't go as planned.

The ideal candidate will communicate clearly and respectfully, build collaborative relationships across teams, and persuade colleagues to work toward shared goals. Pragmatism and flexible thinking are key, you'll often need to find practical solutions where documents or processes are not at the level you might expect. A values-driven approach, an interest in working in an open and inclusive environment, and a willingness to work independently and take initiative are essential.

Experience with hazards in collections, provenance due diligence, or the Government Indemnity Scheme is desirable, as is the confidence to speak up when you notice something that isn't right.

Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
