Senior Explainer

Are you looking to inspire curiosity, ignite wonder, and bring science to life for visitors of all ages?

About us

At the Science Museum Group (SMG), we make it our mission to inspire futures. Our Learning and Events team delivers public programmes that connect audiences with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) through interactive galleries, workshops, and live shows. We are proud to foster a diverse, talented, and collaborative Explainer team, whose work ensures that everyone can engage with and enjoy our museums.

We are now looking for a permanent Senior Explainer to join our team at the National Science and Media Museum. This is an on-site role, delivering high-quality learning experiences across the museum.

About the role

As a Senior Explainer, you will be at the heart of our public programme, performing science shows, demonstrations, and workshops for school groups, families, adults, and community groups. You will bring galleries such as Wonderlab, Makespace, and the Studio to life, telling authentic stories about science and our collection while supporting STEM learning and career pathways for young people.

In this role, you will also train, mentor, and support Explainers, ensuring the delivery of consistently excellent visitor experiences. You will contribute to operational delivery, from preparing materials to coordinating events, and work alongside volunteers to enhance the quality of our programme.

This role requires adaptability to different gallery environments, including varying noise levels, lighting, and temperature, as well as a readiness for active movement across our nine-floor site.

About you

We are looking for someone with:

* Experience and confidence in performing and presenting shows, demonstrations, or workshops.
* Experience working in public-facing roles with excellent communication and customer service skills.
* Experience engaging a wide range of audiences, especially children.
* Experience in training, mentoring, or coaching colleagues or volunteers.
* Strong teamwork, initiative, and problem-solving abilities.
* Good time management skills and flexibility to respond to changing operational needs.
* An interest in STEM subjects and good ICT skills.

Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
