About the role

Are you passionate about information rights and supporting public access to knowledge? We’re looking for someone with a sharp eye for detail and a proactive mindset to join our Corporate Information Management Unit (CIMU) as an Information Compliance Assistant.

This is a vital role supporting the Library’s day-to-day compliance with UK information law – including Freedom of Information, Data Protection, and Environmental Information regulations. You’ll help ensure transparency and accountability by assisting in the handling of information access and rights requests, maintaining statutory records like our Record of Processing Activities (RoPA), and supporting the delivery of compliance advice across the organisation.

You’ll be the first point of contact for information compliance queries, playing a central role in protecting the rights of individuals and upholding the Library’s legal obligations. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of UK information legislation, excellent communication and customer service skills, and a strong commitment to accuracy and integrity.

This role will be a hybrid-working role and you'll need to work a minimum of two days per week in the office. The Information Compliance team within CIMU is based at our St Pancras site in London, but we would also consider applicants who prefer to be based at our Boston Spa site in West Yorkshire. In return, you’ll join a small, supportive team and contribute directly to the Library’s commitment to transparency and good governance.

Minimum Requirements
• A solid working knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act, the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR), and UK Data Protection legislation
• An informed understanding of information compliance as it relates to the British Library
• Excellent communication and customer service skills, both oral and written, including the ability and confidence to persuade managers of the importance of compliance

Closing date: 26 November 2025

Prospective interview date: 17 December 2025

We are unable to provide sponsorship under the UK Skilled Worker visa for this role.

We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian, Mixed Race and other ethnically diverse candidates and disabled candidates. We would like to increase the representation of these groups within The British Library to ensure our workforce is as diverse as the public that we serve. Creating an inclusive workplace is the core of our business and a way to engage the diversity of thought that is essential to achieve our aims.
