Astronomy Education Assistant

About us

Royal Museums Greenwich is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our strategy ‘Charting Our Course’ puts people at the core of its success.

The Role

Working in the Astronomy team and reporting to the Senior Astronomy Manager, Education and Outreach, the Astronomy Education Assistant will play a key role in shaping our future as an astronomy team as the Royal Observatory Greenwich embarks on a once in a generation redevelopment project - First Light. The Astronomy Education Assistant will primarily focus on presenting sessions and supporting the development of the Observatory’s Astronomy Education programme, as well as contributing to more complex events and outputs (including cross-departmental and cross-site work at Royal Museums Greenwich).

Key responsibilities include contributing to the development and delivery of the formal education programme, communicating with schools directly to ensure Royal Observatory Greenwich wide programmes run smoothly, and leading on administrative support for formal education programmes. The post holder will present planetarium shows, workshops, science theatre shows and other public engagement activities, support income generating events, and represent the Royal Observatory Greenwich at local, national and international conferences and events when required.

The successful candidate will have excellent live presentation skills, knowledge of astrophysics/astronomy and space science, excellent writing skills with experience of writing copy for different audiences in a range of media, and the ability to simplify complex scientific concepts for various non-specialist audiences. Experience of working directly with children and adults of all ages, and knowledge of the national curriculum for science for KS1-KS4 is required. A degree in a relevant STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subject OR astronomy related FE qualifications is essential for this role.

This is a full time, permanent role in Band 6 - Management and Competent Specialists. Core hours of work will be 36, 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with weekend shifts on a roster and rest days either side. Due to the nature of the work flexibility is required in meeting the demands of the role.
