Can you lead impactful, insight-driven campaigns that connect millions with the past, present and future of rail?
Are you excited at the idea of helping two national museums grow their reach and relevance across local, national and international audiences?
About us
The National Railway Museum in York and Locomotion in Shildon (part of the Science Museum Group) exist to inspire the next generation with the past, present and future of railways.
The National Railway has just celebrated its 50th anniversary and our museum in Locomotion has marked the 200th anniversary of the railways in style. Both of these venues are much loved public assets and attract visitors from all over the world.
These museums aren't just about the railways; they provide valuable STEM engagement both to school groups and children. Our purpose is to tell the stories of the railways past, present and future but in doing so, we want to inspire the next generation of engineers.
We are seeking a Head of Marketing and Communications who can lead an amazing team to grow our visitor numbers and extend our reach.
The role will be based in York with regular travel to NRM on a permanent, full-time basis. You'll help us grow as both a museum and visitor attraction, building on our existing brand both regionally and nationally.
This is a rare opportunity to oversee the marketing and communications operations for the World's greatest Railway Museum at a pivotal point in its history.
About the role
As Head of Marketing & Communications, you will play a crucial role in enhancing our outreach and attracting both new and long-time visitors to explore the railway's rich history, current developments, and future prospects. You'll develop, deliver and evaluate the marketing and PR strategy for both museums to enhance greater awareness, increased visitor footfall and maximise revenue.
As a key contributor to the Senior Leadership Team at the National Railway Museum, you will report directly to the Director and work within a forward-thinking, dynamic museum that has significant potential to engage broader audiences across the country and beyond, while also connecting deeply with established and emerging communities in York.
This is a deeply rewarding role where two days are never the same and a working environment that will develop your skills as we look to inspire the next generation of engineers.
The role currently works to a hybrid working pattern, which offers flexibility to work from home. However as per the responsibilities of the position, there is still a requirement to be onsite a minimum three days a week and when site-based activity requires it.
About you
We are open minded about your skills and experience in marketing and communications. You don't need to be railway expert either. We simply want someone with the drive and determination to deliver inspirational campaigns that help us grow. Further establishing our brand for inspirational visitor experiences.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
