Do you have experience working with digital audiovisual assets and metadata? Are you looking for an opportunity to shape how world-class museums manage and preserve their growing digital content?
About us
The Science Museum Group is home to the world's leading collection in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine. Alongside our physical objects, we are generating an increasing amount of digital and audiovisual content across our museums and projects
With our Inspiring Futures strategy (2022-2030), we are significantly scaling up our digital activity to expand our reach and effect, particularly in line with our commitments to digital, sustainability, and audiences. To support this work, we are now recruiting a Digital Assets Officer to join our Corporate Information team.
This is a Group-wide role that can be based at any SMG site (London, Bradford, Manchester, York, or Wroughton), with some travel required. Hybrid working is available, with at least 40% of your time spent on-site.
About the role
As Digital Assets Officer, you will play a key part in overseeing and organising SMG's growing digital corporate records and audiovisual assets. You will work closely with the Digital Asset Manager (Audiovisual), as well as content creators and guardians across the Group.
Your work will involve surveying both analogue and born-digital audiovisual records, cataloguing assets, and supporting the development of requirements for a Media Asset Management System (MAMS). You will also prepare assets and metadata for ingest, contribute to quality control processes, and raise awareness of good practice in digital preservation.
This is a practical role with the chance to influence how digital assets are managed across SMG, helping us to safeguard our digital legacy for future audiences.
About you
You will bring:
* Experience of working with audiovisual digital assets, including on physical carriers, and their metadata.
* Relevant experience from collections, asset management, records management, or a digital technical role.
* Knowledge of a wide variety of digital file formats.
* A commitment to good practice and standards-based processes.
* An understanding of asset, collections, or records management principles.
* Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on improving processes and metadata.
* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire good practice across teams.
* A values-driven approach, with self-motivation and the ability to work independently.
It would be great if you also have:
* Experience with DAMS, MAMS, or similar digital asset systems.
* Knowledge of still image, audiovisual, and metadata standards.
* Awareness of digital preservation processes and file format standards.
* Experience in the museum, heritage, broadcast, film, or television sectors.
