Assistant Curator, Technologies & Engineering

Are you excited to work with fascinating objects from hoovers to hovercrafts?

Do you enjoy digging into fascinating subjects and finding creative ways to share what you've learned through writing, presenting, or curating ideas?

About us

The Science Museum Group maintains one of the world's greatest collections of objects relating to the history and current practice of science, technology, medicine, and engineering. It's a diverse and inspiring collection, ranging from the iconic to the unexpected.

We are now recruiting for an Assistant Curator of Technologies and Engineering to join our team and support the ongoing growth, research, and interpretation of this renowned collection - helping to make it accessible, relevant and engaging for researchers and the public, both in person and online.

This is a permanent, full-time role based at the Science Museum in London, with some travel to other SMG sites, particularly the Science and Innovation Park, near Swindon. Travel from the Science Museum to other sites for work will be covered by SMG.

About the role

As Assistant Curator, you'll work with a remarkably diverse collection - from aircraft, beam engines and computers to x-ray tubes, yo-yos, and zips.

Working closely with curators, you'll help grow and shape the collections, ensuring they remain relevant and well-managed for present and future generations. Your research and documentation work will play a key role in improving access to the collection and sharing authentic stories through exhibitions, displays, and digital content to spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

About you

Applicants are not expected to be subject experts; we are looking for individuals who bring curiosity, engagement, and a deliberate approach to their work.

You will have an interest in creating captivating narratives that resonate with a range of viewers. You're deliberately curious and open to learning more about the Science Museum's collections and the broader themes of science, technology, and engineering. You have experience managing a varied workload, with the ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines, and stay organised.

Your ability to communicate effectively shines through in both written and spoken forms, allowing you to adjust your approach based on your audience. In the end, you enjoy working with others on projects, while also being fully capable of undertaking responsibilities alone as needed.

Not sure if you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
