Art Fund Vivmar Curatorial Trainee

Our people are at the heart of National Museums Liverpool. Colleagues from across the NML team make a difference every day, creating memorable experiences for everyone and challenging expectations. We pride ourselves on being a place for everyone, but we are always aiming higher, aspiring to be representative of the communities we serve. Through our people, we are building a culture which embeds trust, respect and inclusion and an organisation in which people are engaged and empowered to enable National Museums Liverpool to evolve. You could be just the right person to join us.

We currently have the post of Art Fund Vivmar Curatorial Trainee available.

The Art Fund Vivmar Foundation Traineeships are generously supported by The Vivmar Foundation and present an initiative to encourage diversity in the recruitment of curatorial staff. NML is pleased to partner with Derby Museums in hosting the Art Fund and Vivmar Foundation Traineeship and in welcoming people with varied lived experiences to apply. During the programme, the Art Fund Vivmar Curatorial Trainee will spend a total of 14 months at the World Museum, Liverpool, and 8 months based at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery, Derby.

For the first twelve months of the traineeship, the successful candidate will be based at NML working closely with the two Assistant Curators within the Global Cultures section to learn and develop essential museum skills in the development and care of NML’s Global Cultures collections, as well as their documentation, research, presentation and interpretation. The Curatorial Trainee will be managed and supported by the Lead Curator (Global Cultures), and will focus on the documentation, research and interpretation of collections from Oceania. A significant part of the role will be engaged in collections care and research which could lead to a small online exhibition or similar offering.

After 12 months in Liverpool, the Curatorial Trainee will spend the next 8 months in Derby at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery, assisting the curatorial team with researching pieces originating from Oceania. They will also participate in discussion and planning sessions as Derby Museum continues to develop its thinking regarding its permanent displays of its World Collections. Like NML, a key aspect of Derby’s methodology is co-production, and the Curatorial Trainee will have the opportunity to learn more about the way Derby undertakes this work and integrates the outcomes into its displays and interpretation.

At the end of the 8 months in Derby, the Curatorial Trainee will spend their last 2 months back in Liverpool using the skills they have gained working in both institutions to complete the Oceania-focused project they began prior to their placement in Derby.
