Curator of Chemistry

Do you have a passion for chemistry and material sciences, past and present? Are you ready to research, develop and share world-leading collections with diverse audiences?

About us

The Science Museum Group cares for one of the world's greatest collections relating to science, technology, medicine and engineering. Our curatorial team plays a key role in researching and interpreting these collections, ensuring they reflect both historical developments and current innovations.

We are now looking for a Curator of Chemistry to join us at the Science Museum in London. This is a key role, responsible for managing historic collections in chemistry and materials science, while shaping future collecting strategies to reflect contemporary trends and breakthroughs.

About the role

As Curator of Chemistry, you will take responsibility for areas such as experimental and industrial chemistry, plastics, and material science. You will develop knowledge of these collections, improve their digital representation, and engage audiences worldwide through exhibitions, galleries, online resources, and public events.

You will also play a vital role in shaping narratives for upcoming displays and exhibitions, ensuring chemistry-related stories are represented prominently for our visitors. Research, writing, and advocacy will be core to your work, alongside supervising staff, students, and volunteers.

This is a varied role requiring a balance of high-level research, exhibition delivery, collections management, and public engagement. The post is based in London but may require occasional travel to other SMG sites such as the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton.

About you

We're keen to hear from candidates with a solid foundation in chemistry, material science, or related fields, and an enthusiasm for engaging audiences with science. You will bring:

* A relevant qualification (ideally to graduate level) or equivalent experience in chemistry, science, history of science, science communication, or related areas.
* Experience of collections management, including handling, documentation, and cataloguing.
* Extensive research experience using varied sources.
* The ability to interpret and communicate complex content for non-specialist audiences across exhibitions, online platforms, or events.
* Experience of working in a museum, gallery, or cultural organisation.
* Strong interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, subject specialists, and external organisations.
* A creative, values-driven approach and openness to feedback, supporting both your own and others' learning and development.
