Senior Manager, Archive and Library

About us

Royal Museums Greenwich is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our strategy ‘Charting Our Course’ puts our people at the core of its success.

The role

Working within the Collections Services team, the Senior Manager, Archive and Library will oversee the management and development of the Library and Archive collections at Royal Museums Greenwich, which was re-awarded accredited archive service status in 2025. These hold over 2 million archives, charts, maps, manuscripts, and a library collection of 100,000 modern printed and rare books, journals and electronic resources, illustrating the history of exploration, empire, navigation and maritime endeavour. The postholder will work to actively increase access to this collection through both traditional and innovative new approaches.

Key responsibilities include managing and delivering the day-to-day operations of the Reading Room, including front-of-house rotas, remote enquiry services, and document retrieval. The Senior Manager, Archive and Library will line manage a team of librarians, archivists, library assistants and archive assistants, identifying strategic opportunities for sustainable, resilient and efficient delivery of services. Further elements of the role involve overseeing the library management system and online ordering system as part of the wider digital strategy at Royal Museums Greenwich, and being responsible for budget management within the Library and Archive.

The successful applicant will need a professional qualification in archive administration, librarianship, or equivalent. Experience in a public research and learning library, archive, or similar working environment, including front line service provision, is essential, as is experience of managing a team of staff, displaying empathetic leadership and an ability to lead through periods of organisational change. The postholder will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and have a well organised, methodical approach with the ability to share knowledge with others.

This is a full time, permanent role in Band 3 - Senior Management. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with an additional hour to be worked as agreed upon with management, although due to the nature of the role, some flexibility may be required.
