Collections Services Project Manager (North)

Do you enjoy high level planning and project delivery? Have you got an understanding of collections management?

About us

The Science Museum Group shares its unparalleled collection of over seven million objects spanning science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with over 3.8 million visitors each year, in addition to over 650,000 school visits and a huge digital audience.

To support our ambitious programmes, we are looking for a Collections Services Project Manager to join our team on a full-time, permanent basis.

This role can be based at either the Science and Industry Museum, Manchester or the National Science and Media Museum, Bradford.

About the role

As Collections Services Project Manager, you will work across an exciting range of projects in the Science Museum Group, primarily focused on delivery across the Northern Museums: Science and Industry Museum, Manchester, National Science and Media Museum, Bradford or National Railway Museum, York.

You will be part of the Collections Services Project Management Team where you will carry out, scope, plan and implement programmes of work that cut across our three primary teams: Conservation & Collections Care, Digitisation (Documentation and Photography), and Registration.

Forthcoming projects range from new exhibitions, supporting activity across our Masterplan capital and estates projects, and digitising our richly varied collection. The role will provide an opportunity to expand and develop your communication and negotiation skills.

This role offers hybrid working which will be a minimum of 2 -3 days on site, however there will be periods where you will be required onsite regularly to fulfil responsibilities of the role.

About you

We are looking for an experienced and highly organised project manager with a good understanding of collections management and care in the museum or heritage sector, however, we also welcome applications from candidates with comparable experience gained in similar sectors where managing and safeguarding collections is a key focus. You will have solid experience in delivering varied and complex collections projects, from planning schedules and managing budgets to coordinating resources and keeping work on track to meet deadlines.

Skilled in communicating with a wide range of stakeholders, you will work closely with Collections Services and other teams across all sites supporting a wide range of projects from exhibitions, collections decants and estates projects. Your ability to plan effectively, identify risks, and write clear specifications will be matched by your confidence in managing contractors, costings, and resources.

Proficiency in Excel and presenting data is essential, alongside a practical knowledge of UK Health and Safety in areas such as manual handling and collections hazard management. Self-motivated and methodical, you will thrive on managing multiple priorities while maintaining a collaborative, solutions-focused approach. Experience with MS Project or preparing tenders would be beneficial, but not essential, and above all, you will share our values and commitment to open, inclusive practice in maintaining our collections.

Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
