Deputy Head of Visitor Experience

About us

Royal Museums Greenwich is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our strategy ‘Charting Our Course’ puts our people at the core of its success.

The role

Working within the Commerce and Visitor Experience team, the Deputy Head of Visitor Experience will lead, inspire and motivate the General Managers and the Bookings & Customer Service Manager, ensuring that teams across all sites deliver a high-quality experience for all visitors. The postholder will work collaboratively and cross-departmentally to deliver museum projects and priorities, contributing to the longer-term planning, development, presentation and interpretation of the sites to ensure Visitor Experience is at the heart of what we do.

Key elements of the role involve setting the direction for Visitor Experience at Royal Museums Greenwich, recognising and enhancing the uniqueness of each of the sites in terms of the visitor offer and making the most of commercial opportunities. The Deputy Head of Visitor Experience will also encourage and empower teams to deliver exceptional service through fostering a culture which promotes high performance, connection with the purpose of the organisation, and wellbeing. Further responsibilities include ensuring the staffing plan across the sites meets the needs of the business and our audiences, creating an inclusive and diverse workforce; working closely with external stakeholders to deliver projects and experiences; and being a main point of contact for the in-house caterer, with a keen oversight on day-to-day operations, service and standards.

The successful applicants will need experience of managing large teams of people across multiple functions, experience of managing varied commercial activities, and a proven ability to prioritise in a demanding environment. Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this role, as is experience of managing budgets and delivering financial targets. The postholder will also have strong problem solving and analytical skills.

This is a full time, permanent role in Band 3 - Senior Management. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with an additional hour to be worked as agreed upon with management, although due to the nature of the role, some flexibility may be required.

Salary: £56,000 per annum
