Planetarium Astronomer

About us

Royal Museums Greenwich is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our strategy ‘Charting Our Course’ puts people at the core of its success.

The role

Working within the Astronomy team and reporting to the Senior Astronomy Manager, Digital and Data, the Planetarium Astronomers will play a key role in shaping our future as a team as well as helping to build our public offer. The postholder will be responsible for ensuring that London's only planetarium remains in optimal condition, and that our shows consistently deliver a world-class experience for every visitor. Further key responsibilities include creating specialist planetarium content for programmes and events, presenting to the public and schools, training staff in the planetarium, line managing part-time and casual hours staff, and maintaining the system. Planetarium Astronomers connect with audiences spanning all ages and backgrounds - from curious toddlers to lifelong learners - tailoring content and experiences to ensure accessibility and impact.

The successful candidate will have experience of using relevant software in the production of content for the planetarium dome and other digital platforms; a passion for digital technology and science visualisation; a degree or relevant experience in a related STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subject. Excellent knowledge of astrophysics/astronomy and space science is required for this role, as well as excellent science communication skills, with the ability to simplify and communicate complex science concepts. The roleholder will be a supportive team player, with experience of working directly with children and adults of all ages in a range of settings.

This is a full-time, permanent role in Band 5 - Management and Proficient Specialists. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, with an additional hour to be worked as agreed upon with management. You will work some designated weekends on a rota with rest days to either side, and you will work bank holidays unless scheduled otherwise or on annual leave. Due to the nature of the role, there will be a requirement to carry out some additional out-of-ours work, which will be paid as overtime or taken in lieu.
