Head of Adult Programmes

Key responsibilities (in order of priority):

• To shape and deliver the adult programme maximising the use of both internal and external knowledge and experience to strengthen the Museum’s wider public programme and generate income, working with colleagues across the organisation.
• To ensure the relevance of the adult programme, driving strong visitor engagement with the Museum’s Collection, exhibitions and displays, while commenting on wider social and cultural issues.
• To lead on development and delivery of consistent, high-quality adult programming characterised by creativity, innovation, diversity and relevance, while being engaging and enjoyable for visitors.
• To manage, develop and motivate the Adult Programmes team.
• To ensure the programme meets the needs of adult visitors in line with the Museum’s commitment to diversity.
• To manage relevant resources, including volunteers as required. To pro-actively and effectively manage project timelines, budgets, risk and quality in line with Museum processes and objectives. To advocate for and report on the programme and projects to internal and external stakeholders.
• Research, monitoring, evaluation and improvement of the adult programme, ensuring it attracts existing and new audiences and meets all relevant income and visitor targets.
• To collaborate with colleagues across the Museum, including Curatorial, Engagement, Membership, Digital, Marketing, Communications and other teams to deliver an engaging and joined-up approach to audience engagement, and to ensure programmes are compelling and well attended.
• Display an awareness of the development of funding proposals and applications for funding.
• Act as a public representative of the Museum, communicating effectively with supporters, peers, government, other external stakeholders and collaborating on matters relating to young people programmes and learning.
• Maintain an up-do-date knowledge and awareness of adult programmes at peer museums and organisations, educating the team on best practise.
• Other duties as directed by the Head of Learning and Programmes.

Main work pressures and challenges:

• Ensure the programme aligns with the Museum’s vision and values and its overall strategic priorities and responds to developments and opportunities.
• Lead a team, delegating work within a fast-paced environment to tight deadlines, managing the delivery of several projects at once, as well as maintaining BAU activity.
• Work flexibly to deliver innovative and creative programming during a time of change to the Museum’s estate arising from masterplan projects.
• Stay informed on industry best practise, introducing new ways of working to the Museum’s adult programme vision and delivery.
• Deliver income and audience targets in line with Museum strategic aims.

Key dimensions:

• Allocate and oversee adult programme delivery and maintain oversight of projects to ensure they are delivered on time and within budget, with appropriate risk management.
• Work collaboratively with curators, other internal stakeholders, as well as external partners, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure the success of adult programming.
• Ensure the recruitment, professional development, and motivation of the team.
• Prepare and update specific reports and targets for funded projects and programmes.

• Lead, manage, and drive continuous improvement in the team to ensure the Museum maintains an excellent standard of adult programme delivery, consistently executed on time and within budget.
• Deliver a successful and Adult Programmes that attracts and maintains audiences and generates income to agreed targets.
• Ensure the continued support and goodwill of the Museum’s volunteers.

What changes are likely to occur in the next two years to this job?

• The Museum is embarking on a period of significant change. As our masterplan projects come online, creativity and adaptability will be key as we start to renovate our main site.
