About us
Royal Museums Greenwich is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our new strategy ‘Charting Our Course’ puts our people at the core of its success.
The role
Working within the Object Conservation team at the Museum’s Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre (PPMCC, Kidbrooke) and reporting to the Object Conservation Manager, the Object Conservator contributes to the day-to-day operation of the Object Conservation studio.

Key responsibilities include the conservation treatment of metal objects (& other 3D objects) and the continued development of specialist expertise in conservation of scientific instruments, operating/working objects and large objects (e.g. anchors, cannons). The post-holder will be expected to maintain accurate conservation records and documentation of condition and treatment in accordance with conservation professional standards and departmental procedures.
The successful candidate will have a recognised professional qualification in metals or object conservation, or equivalent experience in the conservation of historic metal objects. They will have developed their depth of knowledge and practical experience through several years of professional practice. Prior experience in the practical conservation of scientific instruments, operating/working objects, or large objects is desirable. The postholder should have a sound understanding of COSHH requirements for conservation, alongside a flexible and proactive approach to work, good organisational abilities and good computer skills.
