About the role:
Join the British Museum's dynamic Website Content Team as a Website Content Editor, collaborating closely to shape britishmuseum.org, inspiring and engaging our global audiences. Reporting to the Website Content Manager, you'll contribute to delivering a seamless and enriching user experience across our digital presence. Your responsibilities could involve updating key sections like Visit and Membership, building engaging research project pages, crafting compelling web stories and supporting vital user acceptance testing for ongoing website development.
In this role you'll work effectively with cross-functional teams, including Marketing Campaigns, Press, Production, Social Media, and other Museum departments, to ensure content consistency, clarity, and maximum impact for our many audiences.
Key areas of responsibility:
* Develop and produce high-quality, user-centric content for britishmuseum.org, informed by audience insights, user testing, web analytics, and digital trends.
* Collaborate with subject matter experts and internal teams to ensure content accuracy, clarity and impact.
* Commission, assess, and select compelling imagery to enhance content, utilising photo editing software like Photoshop.
* Implement and enforce the Museum's editorial style guide, tone of voice, and writing-for-web guidelines across all content.
* Optimise website content for search engines (SEO) and provide guidance on best practices to other content creators.
* Ensure all website content adheres to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) accessibility standards, employing various testing tools.
* Support the Website Product Manager with user acceptance testing (UAT) and development work for the CMS (Content Management System).
* Monitor and report on website performance using Google Analytics, applying insights to improve content effectiveness.
About you:
* Degree or equivalent experience.
* Significant experience in content editing and web production for large websites.
* Effective copywriting, copy editing and proof reading of short and long form content, using appropriate guidelines.
* Understanding of content design principles.
* Experience with Content Management Systems, preferably Drupal, Digital Asset Management Systems and an understanding of the technical requirements and limitations of these systems for managing multi-lingual content.
* Good knowledge of Google Analytics or similar packages for extracting data about content consumption in live products.
* Confident and competent in sophisticated image editing techniques in Photoshop, Illustrator and similar packages.
* Excellent planning and organisational skills, especially scheduling.
* Experience of making creative decisions in live production scenarios.
* Excellent communication both written and verbal, especially with a range of contributors with multiple demands.
* The ability to manage and develop good relationships with internal/external clients/customers.
* A pro-active can-do attitude to all aspects of the role.
