Do you have experience in performing engaging content and mentoring others in a lively visitor environment? Are you ready for the opportunity to lead, train and inspire a team to deliver world-class science engagement?
About us
At the Science Museum Group, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) engagement is at the heart of what we do. We inform, inspire, and encourage learning on-site, as well as through outreach and online.
We are now recruiting for two Senior Explainers to join us on a permanent, full-time contracts (37.5 hours per week, including 1 in 3 weekends), based at the Science Museum in London.
About the role
As a Senior Explainer, you will be an inspiring presenter and a key member of our public-facing team. You'll deliver engaging science shows, workshops and interactive facilitation to diverse audiences-from schools and families to adults and community groups. Alongside this, you'll support the day-to-day operations of our programmes and help ensure our high-quality experiences run smoothly.
A core part of your role will involve training, mentoring and supporting Explainers, helping them grow their skills and confidence through coaching and feedback. You will play a vital part in developing the next generation of science communicators and ensuring that every visitor encounter is memorable, inclusive and impactful.
You will also contribute to the preparation and delivery of public events, identify and resolve issues during the day, and collaborate across teams to make sure the museum floor runs effectively.
About you
You'll have experience and skill in performing or presenting shows, demonstrations or workshops, as well as in a public-facing role using effective customer service and communication skills.
You will bring experience of working with a range of audiences, particularly children, and have a collaborative and supportive approach to working with others.
Crucially, you'll have experience of training, mentoring or coaching colleagues, and the ability to guide and inspire a team in a busy environment.
Don't meet every requirement? We encourage you to apply even if you don't tick every box. We value transferable skills and diverse backgrounds, and you might be just the person we're looking for.
