Head of Social Media

About the role:
The British Museum has 6 million followers, based around the globe, across a range of social media channels. The Head of Social Media will oversee a team creating compelling, engaging content about the Museum collection. They will explore the development of channels and new ways of collaborating with influencers, helping to design a social media delivery plan to underpin the Museum’s digital strategy.
They will collaborate with colleagues across the Museum, especially in marketing and curatorial departments, to deliver organic content that makes an impact with different audiences. They will monitor and test the performance of organic content, analysing data to report more fully, and make improvements to help us achieve ambitious audience growth goals with their innovative approach.
They will develop a group of social media champions across the Museum and help to shape satellite official accounts, keeping a close eye on new and emerging trends, branding and best practice approaches.

Key areas of responsibility:
• Producing and managing content creation for English-language social media platforms:
o Defining content delivery plans so that our content speaks to existing and new audiences and reflects the priorities of the digital strategy.
o Managing a team to produce high-quality accessible content all year round.
• Defining content schedules and refining workflow
• Working with key stakeholders to commission social media content based on those plans:
o Curators and other stakeholders: supporting Museum staff to find the best approach for their diverse social media needs.
o Building up a network of social media champions across the Museum, providing guidance for and oversight of satellite accounts.
o Marketing: working with the marketing team, press office and e-newsletter teams to plan social media content to support exhibition campaigns and marketing initiatives.
o Designers: working with digital and marketing designers to create relevant visual content or content partnerships: supporting internal and external partners to find the best approach for collaborating.
• Building frameworks and processes for the production of social media content across the Museum
• Using measurement frameworks to optimise content approaches based on analytics.
• Overseeing content production in multiple languages (currently the Museum has Chinese-language social media channels)
• Ensuring appropriate training is provided to the team
• Dealing with all social media content queries and issues


About you:
• Degree or equivalent
• At least 5 years’ experience of managing social media channels in a high-profile, large organisation
• Experience in delivering digital campaigns
• Good understanding of different audiences’ content needs
• Copywriting and copy editing of short- and long-form content
• Demonstrable experience defining content strategy for delivery across multiple social channels
• Thorough knowledge of social media platforms, ability to use listening tools, analytics and data and create accurate and impactful reporting
• Keen awareness of online trends in content consumption and ability to adapt content plans quickly to respond to them
• Strong planning and organisational skills, especially scheduling
• Experience of line managing
• Experience of making creative decisions in live production scenarios
• Highly organised and self-motivated
• High level of resilience and adaptability
