About us

The Conservation and Collections Care team (C&CC) support all conservation activity across the collection and are responsible for establishing and maintaining conservation and collection care standards.

We are now recruiting for a Conservator to join the team at an exciting time as we start to work on new permanent galleries. This is a full-time role, working 35 hours per week on a permanent contract.

About the role

As Conservator you will be instrumental in the development and delivery of conservation and collection care aspects of exhibitions and masterplan projects at the Science Museum. On occasion you may manage short term staff, students and volunteers.

In this role you be covering a diverse range of activities, working closely with colleagues across departments and sites you will be developing, coordinating and delivering conservation plans for exhibitions, loans, acquisitions and transfers, installations and decants. This includes acting as lead conservator on certain exhibitions, providing practical solutions and ensuring that recommendations are fit for purpose, and projects are completed in time and to budget.

You will be completing interventive conservation of objects from across the collections and in a wide range of materials in addition to acting as a responsible person in managing hazardous materials in collections and supervising related specialist contractors.

About you

Joining us, you will have practical conservation experience and knowledge or a relevant conservation qualification. You will have experience undertaking remedial conservation of 3D objects coupled with good knowledge and practical application of current UK Health and Safety practice.

Crucially for this role, you will have good planning, resourcing and prioritising skills, enabling you to work effectively in time-sensitive situations and meet set deadlines successfully. You will be a good communicator with the ability to work well as part of a team.
