The British Museum is seeking an experienced Collection Manager to lead and manage a team of Assistant Collection Managers to deliver a major collection decant as part of the British Museum Blythe House Project. This role will be responsible for a range of collection moves including the move of the Museum’s important textile collections.

Main purpose of job:

This role will manage a team of Assistant Collection Managers and a programme of work to deliver documentation, packing and decant projects as part of the move from Blythe House both to Bloomsbury and to a new, purpose-built storage and research facility, the British Museum Archaeological Research Collection. This is a deadline-driven role and will be an exciting opportunity to be part of a large-scale collection move, contributing to improved storage solutions for the British Museum.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

You will use your leadership skills to manage a team of Assistant Collection Managers to deliver a range of projects to document, pack and move the collections currently in storage at Blythe House, with a particular focus on textiles. You will work with the wider project team to support the planning and delivery of the overall project and contribute to the design and fit-out plans for the new storage facility. You will use your planning skills to deliver projects to time, budget and the required quality.

Person Specification:

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with excellent organisational and team management skills, with a strong track record in object handling and collections care in a museum or similar environment. Familiarity with databases would be an advantage, in particular collection management systems. We are looking for someone with experience of budget and resource management and an ability to engage and negotiate with a range of different stakeholders, both internal and external.
