Sir Nicholas Serota

Director, Tate

Sir Nicholas has been Director of the Tate Gallery since 1988. From 1976 to 1988 he was Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery and before that was Director of the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford. After studying History of Art at Cambridge and the Courtauld Institute, London, he worked at the Arts Council as an exhibition organiser.

Currently a commissioner on the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, he has been a member of the Visual Arts Advisory Committee of the British Council and a Trustee of the Architecture Foundation. He was knighted in 1999.
