Dr Michael A. Fopp

Director, Royal Air Force Museum

Dr Fopp has been Director of the Royal Air Force Museum since 1988 and is also the Managing Director of Royal Air Force Museum Enterprises Ltd. Dr Fopp lectured in Aviation History for many years before being appointed to the Royal Air Force Museum Museum in 1979 as a Research Assistant. He studied at the City University where he completed his MA in Arts Administration and his PhD in Museum and Gallery Management. In 1985 he founded and taught the first ever Museum & Gallery Management MA Course at the City University. From 1985 to 1987 he was Director of the London Transport Museum.

Dr Fopp played an integral part in the fundraising for the Battle of Britain and Bomber Command Museums at Hendon. He led initiatives to improve the London Transport Museum and the amalgamation of museums in to the re-constituted Royal Air Force Museum. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and The Museums Association. He is a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators. He is a member of the International Council of Museums, the International Association of Transport and Communications Museums, the International Committee on Museum Training, The Royal Air Force Historical Society, the International Society of Aviation Historians, the Popular Flying Association and the Experimental Aircraft Association. He is Vice President of the London Underground Railway Society, Honorary Vice President of the Guild of Aviation Artists, Honorary Member of the London Transport Flying Club and Honorary Member of the Bomber Command Association. Dr Fopp is a pilot holding both Commercial and Instrument Ratings and regularly undertaking long-distance flights in light aircraft.

The author of many articles and publications, Dr Fopp is a well-known speaker on a number of museum related and IT subjects.
